How do you know the Lord? What has happened in your life or in the lives of your friends and family that you can point to and say, that’s the Lord? Have you seen miraculous financial provision? Felt loved on a deeper level than ever before? Had a prayer answered beyond your wildest dreams?
Isaiah prophesized in chapter 19 of his book that Egypt would know the Lord. But because they were enemies of God, they would know the Lord not through his gifts, his blessings, or his kindness. No, they would learn about God the hard way. Through famine, war, and drought. Through harsh taskmasters. But in the end, Egypt would come to know God. And they did. By the time Jesus was born, some 600 years after Isaiah’s prophesy, more than a million Jews lived in Egypt and worshipped freely. And after Jesus’ death, Christianity thrived there for more than 600 years.
What about you? Do you know the Lord and walk humbly in his presence? Or do you still struggle with bowing your knee to him as Lord in your life? Do you wrestle with wanting to lead your life as you see fit instead of giving God full rein?
I get it. Giving over control is scary. We fear what God may make us do. Where he may send us. How our lives will change. What we could lose. But if we read the scriptures, truly learn who he is, and his nature, then there’s nothing to fear. Because he has our best in mind. He wants to bless us as we live out our callings and purposes here on earth. And above all, he loves us, perfectly and completely.
I don’t know about you, but I prefer to know the Lord the easy way. To willingly sit at Jesus’ feet, reading scripture, praying, and seeking. Acknowledging his working in my life and the lives of others. But above all, accepting that only he has the right to rule in my life.
