As a Christian celebration should and needs to be at the heart of every spiritual discipline. And at the heart of our very lives. We should be the most joyful people in our acquaintance because we know the end of the story. Jesus triumphs, evils loses, and we have eternal life. But how do you get joy to celebrate, especially when you’re in the middle of a trial and the last thing you feel like doing is celebrating?
Obedience. Trust in God. Following Paul’s direction in Philippians 4:8. And a genuine transformation of our lives through the practice of spiritual disciplines. When our everyday mundane activities have been redeemed and made holy practices, our first thought will be to celebrate that the old way of thinking is gone and God has instilled in us a new mindset. And with that new mindset we are free to focus not on the trials, but on the good things, the lovely things, the noble ones, the good reports, and those will not only bring us joy but also reasons to celebrate.
Richard Foster writes, “The decision to set the mind on the higher things of life is an act of the will. That is why celebration is a discipline.” We must consciously decide to focus on them and through that mindset Jesus will break through into our lives and relationships and bring with him even more joy.
So whoop. Holler. Shout. Clap. Blow horns and whistles. In short celebrate. Join with your brothers and sisters in Christ and celebrate together. Even if your world is burning down around you, celebrate. Not the burning, but that God is with you in the burning. He holds you closely, weeps with you, and will make beauty from the ashes.
So what are you celebrating today?
