Live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel. Paul’s encouragement to the Philippian church are words that should encourage believers today. The church of that day longed for him to come to them and teach them more of Jesus, the gospel, and the way. But Paul knew something every good teacher knows. At some point the students must stand on their own. Must be able to learn and evaluate for themselves. Must be able to apply what they’ve learned.
So how about you? Do you rely only on weekly sermons by inspired teachers for your knowledge and awareness of Jesus, the gospel, and the Christian faith? Or do you dig in on your own? Learning what it means to be a follower of Jesus, a doer and not just a hearer of the word as James says?
If you are studying outside of Sunday sermons, is there any fruit from your labors? Have your behaviors, your thoughts, your relationships changed as a result of your studies? Do you have more joy, more patience? Are you kinder, gentler with those who are around you every day? And how’s your anger and impulsivity? Are they still quick to flare or do you now easily pause and analyze what’s happening inside and outside of you?
Living a life worthy of the gospel is not easy. In fact, it may be the hardest thing you ever do in your life because it means following someone else’s rules and guidance rather than your own. But in the end, the reward of hearing “well done, my good and faithful servant” is worth every moment of effort.
