The words humility or humble are used in the Bible over one hundred times. The ultimate illustration of humility is Jesus. Not only does the son of God come to earth in the form of a human child, his first bed is a feed trough. Then there is his greatest act of humility. Being completely sinless and yet dying as a sacrifice on behalf of a sinful people. Chapter 2 verse 8 of Philippians says this, He humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross.” Which back in those days was the most heinous and humiliating way to be executed.

But what does being humble or humility mean in an age of social media influencers, news channel pundits, posts, and tweets? How can a person be humble when the culture values and rewards pride? The Apostle Paul’s words to the Philippians still hold true today. “Do nothing out of rivalry or conceit, but in humility consider others as more important than yourself. Everyone should look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others.”

So check your heart as you post your latest picture on social media. What is your goal behind it? To prove your worth to others? To brag on your accomplishment? To show a picture-perfect family because your friends’ families are Stepford perfect? As you respond to political posts on X, are you ready with degrading comments or nasty retorts? Do you stop even for a moment to consider the human being on the other side of your screen? Think about their heart, hurts, and worries instead of your own?

I’m not saying don’t share your joys and successes. Nor call out evil for what it is. But walk in love and speak the truth in love. As Jesus demonstrates so beautifully, if you love first, then humility will follow.
