Of all the gifts God has given me, all the desires he has fulfilled, there is still one big unanswered prayer in my life. And it’s not something that I in my own power can fulfill, or at least fulfill the way I’m trusting God will fulfill it. And yet of all the things that I have, all the blessings, all those desires met, sometimes the only thing I can see is what I lack. That one prayer that continues to go unanswered.

Have you been there? Holding onto to hope when everything around you says it’s never going to happen. God’s never going to come through. If you really want it, you’ll go out and make it happen. Abraham and Sarah had just that experience. God had promised them a son. But decades went by. They grew older. Sarah’s body, according to everything they knew in the natural, could no longer conceive.

And yet. God had promised. So they took it upon themselves to fulfill God’s promise of a son and heir. The results of their efforts only brought more turmoil on themselves and created an enemy that has tormented the Israelites and Jewish people every generation since.

So as much as my heart longs for this prayer to be answered, I look to Abraham and Sarah and instead of stepping out in my own power, I crucify my flesh, my plan to Jesus’ cross, to his plan. And it is not easy. Some days I do so through sheer force of will and gritted teeth. But I do it. Because as much as I want what I want, I want his plan, his timing even more. I want an Isaac, not an Ishmael. I want the promise not the substitution.

How about you? Have you had to wait for God’s best, his plan? Has it been hard? Has it been tempting to make it happen? Hold on to God’s nature. He is faithful. He won’t put you to shame. And when the time is right, he the Lord will make it happen.
