I don’t know about you, but waiting is hard for me. Over the years, I’ve learned to lean on the stories of my biblical heroes who had to wait. Like Moses. Like Caleb. Like Abraham and Sarah. Like Samuel’s mother, Hannah. Like Jesus.

Knowing I’m not alone in the reality of waiting is comforting. And I’ve learned to trust that if God is making me wait it’s for a reason, not because he’s forgetful. It’s not easy, but I remind myself He has the best in mind for me. And sometimes the waiting is to prepare me for that best.

While I’m waiting, while he’s preparing me, I’ve realized there is one thing I can do. I can give him thanks. Give him thanks for everything he’s already done. Give him thanks for what he’s doing now in my life and how he’s using the wait to prepare me. And in reality, because he is already there when the wait is done, I can thank him for what he will do, what will come when the waiting, the preparation, are over.

It can be hard to shift our focus from what we don’t have to being thankful for what we do have, but it’s key in our faithwalk. Gratitude, thankfulness shows we are aware of God’s work in our lives. It shows a humble, trusting heart. But did you also know that if you’re grateful, you can’t worry? It’s a scientific fact. Worry and gratitude can’t exist in our brains at the same time. So the next time you look at what you’re waiting for, instead of worrying it won’t come to pass, thank God for what he has done. Thank him for what he is doing. And thank him for what he will do. It won’t make the wait any shorter, but it’ll make you feel better. And it will strengthen your faith in the God who will never let you down.
