This only child just spent a lovely girls’ trip weekend with three other women who have become sisters to me. And as I pondered our time together, it got me to thinking about family. For most people, the word creates a word picture filled with love, laughter, and warmth. It’s a place of safety from the world. But for others, it triggers memories of hurts, disappointments, and possibly devastations. It may even be the furthest thing from safety for them. And for still others, maybe it’s simply a shrug and moving on. They’re okay with doing life on their own, unbeholden to anyone but themselves for whatever reason.
God did create us for family though. Adam and Eve were created because God wanted a family. Procreation creates families. Adoptions, deep friendships, cultures, and commonalities create chosen families. Family is important and really it’s integral to getting the most out of our faith journeys.
But what if you’ve had a less than stellar experience with family? Maybe you were abused by blood relatives. Maybe you were betrayed by friends. Maybe you’ve decided it’s easier to go it alone. God is faithful to redeem those experiences. He does set the lonely in families.
But I believe He also sets the wounded in them as well. Giving his beloved, broken children healthy relationships to counter the unhealthy ones. To help heal the heartbreaks and traumas they experienced. Does it happen overnight? No. Does it always happen the way we want it to? No. But it can and does happen. And the amazing thing is, we don’t even have to know that we need a healthy family relationship. God knows. He’s seen. His heart has broken. And He is faithful to provide exactly what we need when we are ready to experience it. So, even if you don’t know what or how to ask, trust the Holy Spirit to ask on your behalf. And then live in expectation of God’s goodness being revealed—however and whenever He chooses to reveal it. You’re part of His family. He wants you in it. And He’s faithful to make a way.
